Ampelography
A fascinating conservatory
The study and description of grape varieties has a name: Ampelography (derived from ampelos, the Greek word for vine). It consists of comparing grape varieties as well as observing their development and ability to adapt to different terroirs.
There are over 6,000 different grape varieties around the world, 350 of which are included in the official French catalogue and used for the production of French wines. In order to identify them, the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) has defined a set of criteria, of which there are 88 in total, relating to the observation of budding (colour, hairiness), foliage (shape, serration) and the appearance of the clusters and grapes (shape, size, colour), and the vine canes and shoots.
The conservation of these varietals plays a key role in preserving biodiversity. It also provides us with a genetic databank which is used to create new varietals with an increased tolerance to the main diseases and changes in climate.
Our valuable collection
200 different varietals
Domaine du Mont Verrier is home to one of the largest national private ampelographic collections which was developed in consultation with the IFV (French Institute of the Vine and Wine) with valuable input from SICAREX and the Charentes Vineyard Conservatory.
Our collection includes a number of rare varietals for which the surface area cultivated in France is less than 10 hectares (Perdea B, Muller Thurgau B, Liliorila B, Monerac N) and even less than one hectare for some varietals (Perlaut B, Pagadebiti B, Lauzet B, Mireille B). Their rarity makes this collection very valuable.
